18/11 2009: Population, policy 009.67

18/11 2009: Birth control Jerry Lee believes the world, now standing at 6.8 billion inhabitants, is overcrowded. The international community needs to agree on regulations that limit natural births and regulate immigration flows on all five continents to ensure demographic stability over the long run, because long-term population growth is a constant source of concern. It generates pollution, scarcity of existing natural-resources, and social unrest, as foreseen by Thomas Robert Malthus in his Essay on the Principle of Population. Since a peak of 2.2 percent in 1963, the rate of current population growth is slowing down. Scientists mention modern life-styles like a more pronounced tolerance for homosexuality, a wider use of contraception, or late marriages, as reasons explaining these trends. While hunger affects more than one billion people on Earth and plagues are common in Asia, how long will an open-ended capitalistic system cope with a growing demand for natural resources? Jerry Lee demands that world-population growth be stopped, that is, regulated by international law to 1) anticipate human cultural changes over time that may boost population growth again; 2) to stop current hunger in the world and plaques from spreading; 3) to anticipate wars as a way to settle disputes over the distribution of natural ressources around the world. As a convinced Malthusian, Jerry Lee believes, that as productivity continues to rise, world population will continue to rise too with no end at sight. So this is Jerry Lee's demographic logic of a limited population level on all five continents: Supposing that the world's population had reached a stable level, for each additional unit of natural resources extracted or exploited, nations would raise by a constant fraction of that unit their per capita standard of living. A given proportion of taxes raised on that extra unit of production would also effectively raise the quality of life of a constant number of people if it was to be spent on, for example, infrastructure or social services - Read Individual Pension Fund in Special Projects for more information on how Society could achieve a higher standard of living with more free time for Citizens -. Therefore, to break the vicious circle that leads to more inequality and destruction of quality of life, Jerry Lee advises states to adopt birth-control policies. Shortly said, people must restrict themselves to having only two to three children per couple in their life. Immigration laws should follow in developed countries to allow higher immigration flows of younger populations from disaster regions and ensure demographic stability over the long run.
