Laicity in Education

Laicity or nonconfessionality is the basis of our freedoms. Those who are educated in laicity may later embrace the religion of their choice.

To allow veils, turbans or any distinctive, religious or political symbols in schools is a proof that the system supposed to guarantee human development does not function properly.

Every individual should be allowed to be different from others. However, the choice of difference must be conscious and educated, which can only happen if an individual grows in an ideologically neutral environment, that is, in Laicity. Therefore Jerry Lee says it: partisanship symbols at schools or in universities should not be allowed. If anyone feels a strong desire to show off these symbols, he may ask himself if this is really the country of his choice, and might as well find other cultural environments where his differences better fit into local customs.

On the question if veils can be worn in public, Jerry Lee says they may, provided they are not - or do not become - symbols of hatred like the Swastika. The sign was originally a sacred symbol in Hinduism, but also used by native Americans like the Navajos as late as 1909, to eventually be formally adopted by the Nazis of Germany in 1920. But laicity as a value would not have any meaning, if it did not ultimately allow people to manifest their beliefs publically.

Should veils or religious symbols be allowed in public functions or at the working place? Jerry Lee says they may, except for educational institutions. Religious symbols should always be allowed, provided they do not constitute physical or psychological barriers to communication between people. Should symbols raise issues, then those wearing them should be invited to take them off, not on the grounds of intolerance to certain beliefs, but strictly on those of lack of work efficiency and customer satisfaction. Employees who refuse to take them off are fanatics who take the risk of being legitimately dismissed.

So Jerry Lee says it, people should adapt to local cultural environments. Should Laicity not be accepted as a value, let those concerned find an environment that better matches their cultural affinities. When marking their cultural differences outside the educational system, people may as well do so humbly and gratefully, since the laws that permit cultural diversity have been voted by local communities. Should these laws be regarded as insufficiently permissive, let critics compare them to those of a majority of other countries before accepting their views.
