State of Global Tension - February 2010

Global tension measured as a three-month moving-average showed 68 percent in February, a slight improvement relative to the average of January (67 percent). The average continued to be affected by the second worse month in two years (77 percent in December 09) - a rate of more than 0 percent signals a deteriorating state of global affairs over the long run. Compared to last month, the ratio of negative news to good or neutral news reported from the international press decreased to 60 percent (77 percent in December). The data expressed global natural disasters and worldwide intolerance in December. Look at the statistics.

This month, the good news came from Bloom Energy's announcement that it secretely developed a fuel-cell chemical process that can produce clean and cheap energy. While the process was successfully tested, it remains to be seen how fast it can be connected to grids around the world. EU's refusal to cooperate internationally on bank data to protect EU citizens' private sphere, the arrest of top Taliban comander Baradar in Pakistan, or the Robin-Hood Tax initiative, constituted other positive news in February.
This month around, unexpectedly, the negative came from natural disasters. An unprecedented series of avalanches killed 166 people in Afghanistan. A landslide in Madeira causes 40 victims. Finally, an earthquake of magnitude 8.8 hits the Pacific coast causing immense destruction. Chile reported 122 dead in the first hours following the quake. Tsunamis were expected all around the ocean including in Hawaii. A sad note indeed, as a similar event stroke Haiti just one month ago. See news reported in State of Affairs. |
