05/12 2007: Clean Science
Science cannot be permitted to prosper at the cost of life and ethics. Answers to questions have no meaning if they are to serve evil-intended regimes, or pure scientific curiosity. Many examples of such scientific misbehaviour can be cited: Dr von Braun, who worked for the Nazis building rockets that later destroyed parts of London, may have brought the USA to the moon, he did not explain his cooperation with Hitler; doing one's job as a scientist is not an acceptable explanation. Jerry Lee says that scientists, like other individuals, should be made accountable for the consequences of their conduct. Jerry Lee wishes to see honest research using ethical means to serve moral objectives. Dr von Braun never came into agreement with the ethical and moral aspects of the research he carried out during World War II. Today, history repeats: Iranian scientists are developing a nuclear weapon program while closely cooperating with a roguish regime which stated objective is to destroy Western culture and neighbouring countries. Read also gw's policy on Iran. And who does not remember the 90s, when glorious France tested one by one seven atomic bombs in the Pacific; a demonstration of nuclear might, that had catastrophic effects on the Environment and the health of local populations. Scientists who executed the decision by pressing on the atomic button, as much as the military who advised then decision-maker Jacques Chirac, President of the french republic, are all equally responsible for their misconduct. To punish human excess against the Environment, gw made a statement in favour of the creation of a permanent court of justice to prosecute authors of crimes against Humanity and the Environment. Today, nuclear tests are performed in laboratories, which makes one wonder of the use of having destroyed submarine life with radioactivity. This is gw's policy on Nuclear Activity and Health/Environment. An estimated 50 to 100 million animals are killed in experiments worldwide. Many of them are sacrificed to discover medicines based on chemical formulae that are not validated theoretically. Meanwhile, governments seem unwilling to improve existing regulations linked to the use of animals in experiments, and alternative methods of experimentation are not on the table. The above-mentioned examples all constitute unworthy - or dirty - science; a type of science that carries out research with the sole aim of satisfying curiosity or recognition; a form of science that makes promises of huge benefits to humanity with no practical results; a science, meanwhile, that shocks common sensitivity. And so Jerry Lee stands up and says: stop the waste of life! We want scientists to work with clean hands and minds following a Common Ethical Standard of Practice (CESP) that is enforced by law, universally. We want clean science; one that respects above everything else fellow living, conscious or/and sentient beings and the Environment, because as long as we do not condemn fake scientists and their despicable practices, new scientists will bring their share of moral dirt to the world. |
