25/08 2010: Latin American leaders turn their back on drug fighting policies
The fear of not being able to control drug consumption from drug trafficking leads States to legalize it. This psychopathic need for control, when unsatiated, should not lead to the opposite reaction of letting loose criminal behavior - see M4 with grenade launcher (picture) used by some drug cartels -. Obviousely, not every offense and crime can be brought to justice. But this should not mean, that drugs must be legalized. In fact, data shows that the scene of crime in Mexico is not nearly as serious as it appears to be - when compared to Venezuela (nytimes). As faith in divinity gives room to atheism, the Law takes on a more important role in moral values. If that law loses its purpose, confidence will vanish. Homicides, rubberies and other crimes may be regarded with less empathy. Drug legalization will not reduce violence. When the need for certain products is strong, like drugs, a state may attempt to regulate its consumption, but the chances for controlling that market are small as black markets provide for every opportunity to overturn regulations and satisfy a market known, in economic terms, for its very low price-elasticity of demand. Therefore, legalizing drugs with the idea of being able to control the market is illusive. Rather, drawn by the incentive of legalization, the production of drugs by cartels is expected to increase significantly. Prices could be falling, only to encourage more consumption. Though anti-drug campains may attempt to convince the public of how harmful drugs are, the effort may dampen over time deluted by Authorities' mix signals of morality, so that the fight against drug production, trafficking and consumption must continue for as long as drug lords stick to their criminal behavior of harming society. But as the fight must go on, States must promote social development with more revolutionary policies. This is gw's policy on Drugs and Prostitution, Population and Society.
